Helmsley Walled Garden

Valley View Farm Holiday Cottages are less than 5 miles from Helmsley, so a visit to the Helmsley Walled Garden would be a great way to while a way a few hours.

  • Helmsley Walled Garden is a five acre walled garden.
  • The garden dates from 1758.
  • The setting is beautiful and is set against the backdrop of Helmsley Castle in the grounds of Duncombe Park.
  • The garden was originally built to supply the Duncombe estate with fruit, vegetables and cut flowers.

Helmsley Castle

Helmsley Castle is well worth a visit when staying at Valley View Farm Cottages.
  • Helmsley castle dates back to the 12/13th century.
  • The medieval castle ruins are surrounded by ditches and banks.
  • The ruins include the West Tower and a Tudor Mansion.
  • The initial castle was built by Walter Espec until he died and then was continued by the de Roos family.

All Saints Church, Old Byland

Old Byland has it's very own church that is full of history and the Valley View Farm Holiday Cottages are only a stones throw away from the church.

It seems that a church has stood in Old Byland since Saxon times. The present church building takes much of it's style from the Norman period. Interesting features include the Anglo-Saxon sundial, the Norman winged horses and horned head carvings.

All Saints church is situated in the village of Old Byland and is popular with walkers and ramblers as it is an interesting historical site and a welcome rest site with help yourself refreshments available.

Battle Of Old Byland

The village of Old Byland is steeped in history so why not come and stay in one of the Valley View Farm Holiday Cottages in this beautiful historic village and learn about the Battle of Old Byland.

The Battle of Old Byland took place on the 12th October 1322 between the Scots and the English. This battle was part of the Wars of Scottish Independence. The Scots were victorious, led by Robert Bruce. The English king, Edward II was in residence at Rievaulx Abbey with Queen Isabella when the Scots advanced. The English troops led by John de Bretagne, Earl of Richmond where defeated leaving the king to flee the Abbey.

Valley View Farm

Valley View Farm Cottages - Floor Plans

Here are the floor plans for the six stonebuilt holiday cottages at Valley View Farm in the village of Old Byland, near Helmsley in North Yorkshire.


Couch Cottage is a one bedroom cottage (sleeps 2) which opens onto a courtyard with an amazing view. It has a zip and link bed (twins/kingsize) and is all on the ground floor. The kitchen and living room are open plan. The en-suite bathroom is a wet-room and suitable for disabled access.


Drey Cottage is a two bedroom cottage (sleeps 4) with one double and one twin bedroom. Both rooms have en-suite facilities. The double bedroom has a shower and the twin room has a bath. This cottage can connect to Holt Cottage to make a 10-person family cottage.






Form Cottage is a compact one bedroom ground floor cottage (sleeps 2) with a kingsize bed and a modern bathroom with bath and shower.









Formicary Cottage is a compact one bedroom ground floor cottage with twin beds and an en-suite bathroom with bath and shower. There is a breakfast bar area and the living room also has a double sofa bed. Sleeps 2-4.





Granary Cottage is a spacious three bedroom cottage which can sleep 6. The kitchen/dining room and living room are downstairs, as is a twin room with en-suite wet room and a separate WC. Upstairs are two bedrooms, one a twin with en-suite bath and shower and the other a kingsize bedroom with bath and shower.


Holt Cottage is a three bedroom cottage (sleeps 6) with sitting room, dining area and kitchen upstairs. One twin room with en-suite bathroom is upstairs and one downstairs along with a bathroom (with bath and shower) and a double bedroom with a shower room.

Duncombe Park

There are plenty of things to see and do around Helmsley ,when staying at one of the six stonebuilt holiday cottages on Valley View Farm.

Duncombe Park is the home of Lord and Lady Feversham. The house, grounds and parkland are open to the public from March through to October. Check the website for specific dates and opening times.

The house dates back to the early 18th century. Visitors can see the Great House, the Stone Hall, the Saloon, the Dining Room, the Library, the Ladies Withdrawing Room as well as the Yellow Bedroom and Dressing Room and the French Bedroom and Dressing Room.

The gardens cover about 35 acres and include a great lawn and level terraces, temples, yew trees, woodlands and a scented 'secret garden' around the old conservatory.

The parkland covers 400 acres of land and includes a Nature Reserve and you can explore woodlands, a river valley and meadows with walks and trails through the parklands.

Duncombe Park hosts events throughout the year so check their website for details of what's on when you are visiting Helmsley.

Helmsley Treasure Hunt

The Helmsley Treasure Hunt is a great fun and entertaining way of getting the whole family out and about in the fresh air doing something a bit different for a couple of hours when you come and stay at one of our Valley View Farm Cottages.
  • The treasure hunt requires no prior knowledge of Helmsley as all clues are solved by observation.
  • Both young and old can enjoy the hunt and solving the clues.
  • A map is supplied just in case you get lost.
  • The answers are at the back of the book so you can check any unsolved clues before you leave.
  • The route is suitable for wheelchair users although there are some kerbs which are not dropped.
  • A hunt will take one to two hours to complete however they can easily take 1/2 or even a full day if stops are made along the way.
  • You will learn some interesting facts about the town of Helmsley.
  • You can purchase a treasure hunt for £4.99 or download a hunt for £5.50.

Valley View Farm Recommends The Feathers Hotel For A Great Meal

Valley View Farm is the home to Ample Bosom, my online lingerie, swimwear and nightwear company. On Friday night the Ample Bosom team and their partners went to The Feathers Hotel in Helmsley and had a lovely three course meal with coffee and mints after. We were entertained by a brass band and later on a disco were the staff got up and boogied the night away.

Everyone had a great time eating, drinking, chatting and dancing.

Ample Bosom would like to thank The Feathers hotel for an enjoyable evening.

Valley View Farm

Valley View Farm sits on the edge of the North Yorkshire village of Old Byland, near Helmsley.

We are a family run working farm with approximately 200 acres of arable land as well as having beef and sheep.

We have converted six of the barns into holiday cottages and some of the barns have also been converted to house the office, storage and fitting room for Ample Bosom, the online lingerie, nightwear and swimwear company that I also run from Valley View Farm.

Valley View Farm Cottages consists of six stonebuilt cottages with one, two or three bedrooms, located in the peaceful and picturesque village of Old Byland on my family farm. There are good places to visit with the coast, York, or just beautiful countryside only a short distance away.

Couch Cottage is a one bedroom cottage (sleeps 2) which opens onto a courtyard with an amazing view. It has a zip and link bed (twins / kingsize) and is all on the ground floor. The kitchen and living room are open plan. The en-suite bathroom is a wet-room and suitable for disabled access.

The cottage has a cooker, microwave, washer dryer, fridge-freezer, vacuum cleaner, iron and ironing board, BBQ, and there is a hair dryer in each bedroom, and a TV. This is as well as the TV, video and DVD player in the sitting room, which has a freeview digibox. All guests have access to the main patio area, with garden furniture. Arrival time is 3pm and departure time is 10am. There will be a welcoming tea tray on arrival.
