How Old Is Too Old To Farm? Oxford Farming Conference, January 5th 2010

I have just been reading on the Farmer's Weekly website that the Oxford Farming Conference will be debating about how old is too old to be farming on the 5th January 2010.

This is a very sensitive issue and I will be interested to see both sides of the argument.

I am particularly interested in this debate as we are a family farm with father and son farming together. It will certainly make for an interesting discussion around the kitchen table when I tell John and Stuart about it. I'll let you know what they think.

In the meantime click on the link if you would like to read more about the debate or would like to vote in the Farmer's Weekly poll about how old is too old to be farming.

Cromwell's Banned Christmas, York Dungeon

Have you ever thought of banning Christmas in your house? Well in 1647 Oliver Cromwell banned Christmas.

The York Dungeon are recreating his reign of anti-festive terror, with henchmen patrolling the building nabbing culprits guilty of eating mince pies and hauling them in front of the Puritan courtroom, where Judge Mental will arrange sentencing.

The Dungeon's mirror maze will be strewn with wreaths embedded with skulls and roasted robins on spits.

To learn more about Cromwell's Banned visit York Dungeon between 11am-4pm, from the 12-27 December (closed Christmas Day); adults £14, children £10 (less if booked online.)

There is plenty to see and do in York over the festive season and Valley View Farm Cottages are less than an hours drive away so
why not take a break at one of our cottages over the festive season, go on we won't tell Cromwell!

Free Star Gazing Event Sutton Bank 12th December 2009

This year is the International Year of Astronomy and to round up the year, the North York Moors National Park is teaming up with The York Astronomical Society to host a free star gazing event on Saturday 12 December at Sutton Bank National Park Centre.

The North York Moor National Park makes an excellent venue for star gazing as National Parks have dark and clear unpolluted skies which are not lit up by street lights.

The Star Party will start at 6pm and will include two illustrated talks from the society’s astronomers. The café at Sutton Bank National Park Centre will be open from 5pm serving a selection of food and drink. Telescopes will be provided but people are also encouraged to bring their own telescopes along for tips on getting the most from them. Members of The York Astronomical Society will be on hand to offer help and information throughout the evening.

Martin Whillock, Secretary of The York Astronomical Society, said:

“With a telescope and the right weather conditions, the night sky can be a magical thing to observe and the conditions around Sutton Bank, with its low light pollution, are ideal for getting some excellent views. Come well wrapped up and join us for what promises to be a very exciting evening.”

For further information on the star gazing event, contact Martin Whillock on tel: 01347 821 849 or email: martin@whillock.me.uk or the North York Moors National Park Authority on 01439 770657. Further information on York Astronomical Society can be found at www.yorkastro.org.uk

If you are into astronomy or would like to learn more about the stars in our sky at night then why not come along to Sutton Bank. Sutton Bank National Park Centre is just a 9 minute drive from Valley View Farm Cottages so why not combine a break away with some free star gazing.
