North Yorkshire Moors Railway Walk The Line Event 8th November 2009

Calling all railway enthusiasts - here's a quick reminder of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway Walk The Line event which is to be held on Sunday November 8th and is an opportunity for members of the public to show their support for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, by “walking the line” between Goathland Station and Bridge 30, a distance of less than a mile northwards, from the station.

You will be pleased to know that at this time, the railway will be closed to operations! Organised walking tours starting at 10am from Goathland Station, will be on offer, leaving hourly. The tours will enable supporters of the Railway to walk the track and to see Bridge 30 at first hand.

Walkers are advised to wear stout foot wear and unfortunately anyone under the age of 10 will not be permitted.

The bridge carries the railway over Eller Beck near Darnholme. It is over 150 years old and has reached the end of its life, needing replacement over the Winter period and before the railway starts its main seasonal operations in March 2010. The Railway has to replace it over the winter, but due to its construction and the difficulties in accessing the site due to its remote location, the estimated cost is about £600,000.

Those wanting to walk the line will be asked to contribute £5 per person, with contributions going towards the Appeal. Further information is available from Neal Clarke, Chairman of North Yorkshire Moors Railway Plc at neal.clarke@nymr.co.uk.

Come and stay at Valley View Farm and enjoy this wonderful walk.

Sir Nigel Gresley North Yorkshire Moors Railway

LAST PASSENGER TRAIN TO GO WITH A BANG AS AGEING BRIDGE REACHES THE END OF THE LINE!
The last passenger train to travel over Bridge 30, between Goathland and Grosmont in North Yorkshire, is expected to go with a bang.
Fireworks and several other surprises will help to mark the final send-off, planned for the early evening of Sunday 1st November.
The occasion will mark the end of a 145 year piece of history, as bridge 30, which forms an 80ft span and takes the line over the Murk Esk, between Goathland and Grosmont, is set to be removed. It will be replaced with a new structure over the winter months. The cost of doing so is estimated at £650,000, with the line being severed while the work takes place.
There is an opportunity for visitors to mark the final journey over Bridge 30, before it is replaced, by travelling on a special Bridge Benefit last train on Sunday 1st November. The train will depart from Grosmont at 1530hrs for Pickering, returning from Pickering at 1700hrs, and will be hauled by the iconic streamline steam engine “Sir Nigel Gresley”. A £3 supplement for the round trip will be payable on top of the normal fares, with proceeds to the ‘Bridge & Wheels’ Appeal. (Passengers returning from Grosmont to Pickering only will not be charged the supplement).
For those looking to enjoy the experience in more opulent surroundings, a limited number of pre-bookable First Class seats are available for the round trip, offering tea, sandwiches and cakes in one of the more historic saloon carriages. A £10 supplement is payable in advance. Reservations can be made by phoning 01751 472508 or by email to info@nymr.co.uk following which a commemorative ticket will be issued.
NYMR General Manager, Philip Benham, said “What we’re looking to do is to recreate the atmosphere of the “last trains” that were so common in the Beeching era – the difference this time, of course, is that the line will re-open again in March next year! We’re ushering out a bridge that has served the Railway well, in readiness for a new structure of some significance to replace it.”
There may be some noise and bangs as the train passes over the bridge, and those who might be disturbed with very young children, or with dogs, will be advised to travel towards the rear of the train from Pickering.
A full service of steam hauled trains will operate throughout the weekend Sat 31 Oct and Sun 1 Nov, while the railway’s diesel railcar will be operating shuttle services between Grosmont and Goathland giving passengers a final chance to view the old bridge through the train’s panoramic windows.
The weekend will also be a last chance to travel behind ‘Sir Nigel Gresley’ in the 50th anniversary year since the engine became the fastest steam engine since the Second World War with a speed of 112mph on 23 May 1959.
Also during the weekend, the Railway is offering additional entertainment along the line, combining steam train rides with family entertainment, in what is dubbed the Wizard Weekend.
Birds of Prey will be on show at Levisham Station over the weekend with static displays on 31 Oct and demonstrations from 12.30pm on 1st November. A Punch and Judy show will also be performed on the Saturday.
At Goathland, a 30 minute magic show will be performed at regular intervals over the weekend.
Balloon modelling, face painting, magic tricks will be a feature at Levisham, Goathland and Grosmont stations over the weekend.
The Jet Set Border Morris dancers, dressed Goth-style, all in black, will be performing at regular intervals at Goathland and Grosmont stations, using the train to travel between the two stations.
Passengers may also like to visit Whitby, where the town’s annual Goth Weekend is taking place, but are asked to note that the last train back from Whitby on Sunday 1 November will run earlier than usual at 16.00hrs.
For further details about the train running during this weekend, go to http://www.nymr.co.uk/ or alternatively call 01751 472508.

Bee Aware Week

This week is Bee Aware Week (24th-30th October).

The Women's Institute have launched the campaign to raise awareness of the plight of the honey bee.

They state on their website that,
"Currently, honey bees are coming under threat from pests and diseases for which treatments are not fully understood or are ineffective. Many bee keepers have experienced the complete destruction of their hives from such diseases, whilst the UK is losing its bee population at around 30% a year (up from just 6% in 2003). The UK has 250 species of bees, three of which have already become nationally extinct."
They call you to action by asking you to:

  • If you have a garden or a window box, fill it with bee-friendly plants and flowers. Plant up a window box with asters and sunflowers, make a bee-haven out of a sunny corner with foxgloves, hollyhocks and larkspur, and choose trees such as willows and limes for bigger gardens.
  • Get in touch with a local beekeeper and ask them how you can best help protect the honeybee.
  • Encourage your local community to plant more flowers to increase bees' food sources. If a local community group is planning to plant up an area of land, why not suggest that they use some bee-friendly flowers and shrubs?
As farmer's, we here at Valley View Farm are very aware of the bee population and try to farm in a bee friendly way.

I am also hoping to have my own bee hive very soon.

Great Nut Hunt October 2009 - March 2010

This October saw the launch of the Great Nut Hunt by the People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) and supported by Natural England. They are urging members of the public to help save the rare hazel dormouse by taking part in a nationwide survey of woodlands around the country.

The Great Nut Hunt requires the public to look out for gnawed nuts when they are in a woodland area. Hunting out the gnawed nuts will help to determine the distribution and numbers of the hazel dormouse which is becoming a rare woodland mammal. AS well as hunting out gnawed nuts, the People’s Trust for Endangered Species has hidden 21 specially-commissioned nuts, 20 in silver and a single gold one, across counties in England and Wales.

The Chief Executive of the People’s Trust for Endangered Species, Jill Nelson said,
“The best time to conduct the survey is over the autumn and winter when discarded nut shells are easiest to find on the woodland floor, before the leaf litter is too dense. The survey uses simple techniques requiring no specialised skills, making the Great Nut Hunt a fun activity for young and old ‘nutters’ alike as well as an ideal family expedition. With the help of the public, this year we hope to exceed the 250 000 nuts found in 1993!"

The Chief Executive of Natural England, Dr Helen Phillips said,
"Nut Hunts are a great way of monitoring dormice and this method has now been copied in other countries. The nuts you send in really do make a difference to dormouse conservation by helping us understand how well dormice are surviving and where they still occur so that steps can be taken to ensure their long term survival. What better excuse to get out and enjoy our fantastic woodlands and help save these rare mammals.”
So, if you go down to the woods, make sure to look out for signs of dormice and you may just find a gold nut!

To take part in the Great Nut Hunt 2009, which will run from October 2009 until March 2010, register online at the People's Trust For Endangered Species.

Participants will receive a survey pack which contains more information about the silver and gold nut prizes and clues as to their whereabouts, as well as more information about the hazel dormouse, a recording form, the Countryside Code and guides on how to identify hazel trees and nibbled nuts.

Some of the woods located near to Old Byland include:

Nettle Dale Wood
Reins Wood
Spring Wood
Deep Gill Wood
Greencliffe Hag Wood
Ashberry Wood

War Weekend, Pickering

We had some guests staying at the weekend who are regulars at the war weekend at Pickering and said that it was the best weekend so far. I have attached the press release from the North Yorkshire Moors Railway - so book your accommodation for next year it looks as though it is going to be bigger and better that this year!

21.10.09 RAILWAY AT WAR EVENT DECLARED A HUGE SUCCESS
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway hosted the biggest and best attended ‘Railway at War event’ yet, following the 3 day event which took place last Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The event, now in its 17th year, attracted an estimated 15,000 visitors to the North York Moors area, with more than 8,000 travelling by steam train between Pickering, Levisham, Goathland, Grosmont and Whitby. Visitors came from all across the UK, with interest also being shown this year from Norway, Holland and Germany.
For the weekend the clocks are turned back to 1943 and the Home Front, to give a poignant reminder of what life was like during those dark days, including for thousands of railwaymen and women. Hundreds of visitors can be seen in civilian and military clothing from the period and at Pickering, a large parade through the town brings the event into sharper focus.
Re-enactment groups with their vehicles and equipment help to bring to life a number of scenarios along the Railway, including fire-fighting during the blitz, dealing with an air raid, and keeping the Home Guard on their toes. ENSA entertainers help to boost morale whilst wreath-laying ceremonies at Pickering and Grosmont help to underpin a serious message.
NYMR General Manager, Philip Benham, said: “This has to be one of the best events of the year for local tourism. It is about nostalgia, and we can all be proud of the crowds, the spectacle, the atmosphere and general goodwill. The growing interest year on year in this weekend is amazing. This year was particularly special as we remember the outbreak of war 70 years ago. There is a serious message throughout the event, and we are particularly keen to remember the sacrifices made by the many thousands of railwaymen and women who served on the Home Front. But people also come for an experience, and to have fun - we can certainly deliver that. The historic railway, period stations and timeless countryside all play their part. I would also like to pay tribute to our volunteers and staff without whose hard work over many weeks in planning and preparation, the event would not be possible.”

How To Make A Jack O Lantern For Halloween

Jack o Lanterns are popular at Halloween (31st October). Children love to help to make the lantern.
  1. Choose from the vegetable garden or buy a large pumpkin.
  2. Cut a circular hole around the stalk of the pumpkin. (Try to tilt the point of the knife into the centre of the pumpkin as this will help to stop the lid from falling in.)
  3. Scoop out the seeds and any loose flesh using a spoon and the knife if needed.
  4. Sketch a face onto the pumpkin. Use a biro so any mistakes can be scrubbed off with a scouring pad or fingernail.
  5. Carefully cut out the features of the face.
  6. Scrape away the flesh on the inside of the face until it is only 1cm thick.
  7. Using a knife, mark a circle the size of your candle or tea-light in the centre of the base.
  8. Carefully hollow out the marked area with a teaspoon.
  9. Place a candle in the hollow, light it and replace the lid of your jack-o'-lantern.
The inner flesh of the pumpkin can be:

Olympians Support McCain Yorkshire Coast 10km Race

Sally Gunnell, Iwan Thomas and Stephanie Twell will participate in the McCain Yorkshire Coast 10km Road Race in Scarborough on Sunday 11th October 2009. The race will follow a scenic route around the Scarborough Castle headland, is the joint initiative of McCain Foods (GB) and Scarborough Athletic Club, and will also include a 2.5km Family Fun Run. The race will be supporting five charities, The British Heart Foundation, Marie Curie, Alzheimer's Society, Cancer Research and the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.

Olympians, Gunnell, Thomas and Twell, represent the best of British athletics talent and all three are working to help McCain encourage people of all ages to get involved in athletics and spot upcoming British sporting talent through the McCain Track & Field Roadshows or the McCain Track & Field television show on Channel 4.

Gunnell, who won the gold medal in the 400m hurdles at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, is the only woman in history to have held the four major titles of Olympic, World, European, and Commonwealth Champion at the same time. Commenting on her involvement, she said, “As a busy mum with three growing boys, I know all about the pressures that parents face in getting their children to eat healthily and get active. I am delighted that McCain has joined forces to support the McCain Yorkshire Coast 10km Road Race and the 2.5km Family Fun Run to help support active families.”

At the age of just 15, Twell, was the youngest member of the British team to compete in the 2005 World Championships. With a string of successes under her belt, Twell, is one of the countries hopes for a medal at London 2012. Wanting to pass on her enthusiasm to as many people as possible through her role as a McCain Track & Field ambassador, she commented, “In lead up to London 2012, as I focus on getting some serious training under my belt, I am delighted to come and cheer local residents along the McCain Yorkshire Coast course, as well as talent spotting for any young British athletes!”

Thomas, a former European Champion, Commonwealth Champion and World Cup Winner, remains the British Record Holder for the 400m. Currently co-presenting the McCain Track & Field Roadshow, a 12-part TV series, currently airing on Channel 4, he said: “I believe in balancing an active lifestyle with enjoying good food and remain hugely passionate about athletics. The McCain 10km Race and Family Fun Run are great opportunities to encourage everyone in the North East to enjoy a sport that has given me so many great memories.”

The 10km Road Race, and 2.5km Fun Run, will start from the Scarborough Spa Complex, South Bay, and will follow a traffic-free course along the sea-front. Electronic chip timing will be used from start to finish on the 10km race to ensure that each and every athlete is guaranteed an accurate time, regardless of how long it takes to cross the start line.

Bill Bartlett, Corporate Affairs Director at McCain Foods (GB) said: “We hope the involvement of these Great British athletes will inspire families to join us in what promises to be a fun, healthy day out for all. McCain Foods has been based in Scarborough for over forty years now and we are delighted to demonstrate our commitment to encouraging active lifestyles in our home town.”

There is nothing better than a walk on the North York Moors. Perfect for a gentle stroll or a more rigorous ramble.

Beauty spots I would recommend seeing include Sutton Bank, which is just on my doorstep, Roseberry Topping and the Cleveland hills to name a few.

The North York Moors offers a varied landscape featuring heather, sea cliffs, beaches and grassy dales.
