Lavender Harvest Started At Wolds Way Lavender

The 2010 Lavender Harvest is now under way at Wolds Way Lavender.

Like us with our harvest here at the farm, the harvester and tractor has to be serviced on the lavender farm before harvest begins.

There are over 6 acres of lavender to cut at Wolds Way Lavender and everyday through until the end of August (weather permitting) the harvester will be busy harvesting the lavender.

Why not visit Wolds Way Lavender at Wintringham near Malton.
  • There are lavender and herb sensory areas were you can view and smell the plants in the raised beds.
  • You will find a plant centre with over 120 varieties of herbs and lavenders available to purchase.
So why not make your base one of the Valley View Farm Cottages as you and plan a visit to Wolds Way Lavender.

Mike Pannet Book Signing Grosmont Station 1st August 2010

Some of Yorkshire’s greatest will be taking to the tracks on Yorkshire Day, Sunday 1st August.

Best-selling author, Mike Pannett, will be conducting a series of book signings to mark the launch of his third non-fiction title, “Not on my patch, lad”.

He’ll be spending the day as a guest of the North Yorkshire Moor Railway together with his literary team, Alan Wilkinson, Ann Pannett and Karen Geary.

Mike will be the guest speaker at a lunchtime reception to be held at Grosmont Station. He will talk about his literary career to date, and will spotlight his third book to be released, which will be followed by book signings.

The reception will bring together 120 guests who are to lunch onboard the railway’s Yorkshire Day Pullman service, together with some of the best local food and drink producers in the County, whose products grace the menus of the railway’s Pullman service week in week out as well as the railway’s tearooms.

At 12.30pm, Mike will then board the train as it steams off towards Pickering. On arrival at Pickering, he will carry out more book signings, before the Yorkshire Day Pullman returns to Grosmont. Copies of his new book will be available for purchase from the station shops along the line.

Commenting on the arrangements, he said: “What better way to mark Yorkshire Day than to take a steam train through the North York Moors. The sights, the sounds, the smells are so evocative. It is fitting for me to be here, given that the Railway – now the most popular heritage steam railway in Britain - is as much a part of the backdrop for my books as are the characters and situations that unfold. I look forward to meeting as many of my readers as I can and to helping make the day a big success.”

“Not on my patch lad” has only just been launched and has already established itself as the best-seller across all 16 branches of Waterstones in Yorkshire. Mike’s previous books, “Now then lad” and “You’re coming with me lad” have featured in the top sellers charts of every high street book store in the country.

At a time when the final episode of ITV’s “Heartbeat” is about to hit our screens, there are high hopes that Mike’s work may be translated to the big screen in years to come, to help keep Yorkshire centre stage across the world.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is just a 30 minute drive from Valley View Farm in Old Byland, so why not stay at one of our 4 star self catering cottages and take a ride on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, a great way to see the North York Moors.

Cottages Reviewed On Facebook

For those of you into social media you can catch up with Valley View Farm on facebook (and twitter)

I was delighted to read this review on facebook by Sue,
"A peaceful haven away from the hustle and bustle of life The cottage was cosy and warm with all the home comforts including deliciously snuggly duvets. We do not do walking or cycling but the farm was a wonderful base to come back to in the evenings. There are many superb restaurants nearby and the scenery is spectacular. The weather was horrible for most of the time we were there but it didn't dampen our enthusiasm and we we will definitely be going back. Thank you Sally."

Re-Roofing Garage

John has changed his car – not for a new one mind but even so an upgraded model and with the high winds that we experienced here last week there was a fair bit of dust that came down from the garage roof onto the car.

We have known that this roof needed some attention and so to prevent any damage to the car the roofers were sent for - I have to say that in only 3 days the roofers have worked very hard and the roof has been off and half of it is back in place already, as you can see from the photos.

The activity in the yard has certainly caused a great deal of attention by our guests, we usually have a chat about the cats that we have on the farm that come into the yard to be fed at teatime, but not a sign of the cats at the moment – they know when to stay out of the way of a falling slate.

Wool Loading

The sheep have been sheared and are looking nice and cool whilst enjoying this lovely summer weather, I know that wool does not get used much in the traditional sense of knitted jumpers anymore, however, it is good to hear of eco friendly insulation using sheep’s fleece and I would like to think that that is where some of our fleeces will end up.

I went to take a photograph of Stuart busy loading but when I go there they were still waiting for the lorry, so this is a picture of traffic congestion up the lane from here and you will be able to make out the packed fleeces on the various trailers awaiting their fate.

If traffic congestion does not look as peaceful as this where you are then come and book in at Valley View Cottages to get away from it all.

Crop Circles, Sutton Bank

We have a new phenomenon that has appeared this weekend in a field at the bottom of Sutton Bank – crop circles – they really are quite spectacular and adds to the wonderful view from the top of Sutton Bank in my opinion, however the farmer whose lad it is may think differently about it.

Click on this link to see a photo of the crop circles at Sutton Bank.

On trying to find out a bit more about crop circles I unearthed this information that I thought you might find useful.

These unexplained designs in fields, usually in crops of wheat or corn, often appear overnight, Brain Hussey is leading crop circle expert and has theories that include:

Whirlwind or plasma vortex – this is when a vortex is formed high above ground and then when it hits ground level causes the design as the force is like a tornado.

Plasma gravitational theory – this is a complex gas and from reading the information about it, the simplest explanation is that it is like lightning and as such more of a light phenomena, that can cause these designs.

Earth energies – this appears to be caused by geomagnetic activity – ley lines, apparently, act as a vital current flowing through the earth – and it would be interesting to know where the ley lines are in relation to this field.

Extra terrestrial origin - one of the most popular beliefs and did we not all love ET? – these crop circles could be the indentation of the craft that brought aliens to this earth, they may have been interested in the flying club that is at the top of Sutton Bank!

Underground archaeological – not quite so exciting as alien life form but it is thought that the circles could be caused by some form of underground energy

Hoaxes – One man or woman went to mow……

Force of God – patterns created by some Godly act – however with everything that is going on in the world how God has time for this frivolity is beyond me.

Military experimentation – we do have military establishments close by but again I cannot see that any secret experiment is going to cause these pretty designs as a result – but there again I am not privy to what happens in the military.

Whatever the theory, crop circles will continue to be with us and cause us to stand and stare and wonder.

Come and stay at Valley View Farm Cottages so that you can spend many a happy hour observing and forming your own opinion about crop circles.
