Burns Night

Burns Night is the celebration of Scotland's famous poet, Robert Burns. Burns Night is celebrated each year in Scotland on or around 25th January, which was the birthday of the poet in 1759. The day also celebrates Burns' contribution to Scottish culture. Burns' best known work is "Auld Lang Syne".

A Burns Supper can include haggis and scotch whiskey on the menu as well as guests at the supper reciting Burns'poetry. A more formal Burns Supper follows a set format and includes:
  • The hosts welcome speech with a reading of Selkirk Grace and then a soup course is served which is usually, Scotch Broth, Potoat soup or Cock-a-leekie soup.
  • The Entrance of the Haggis - everyone stands as the haggis is brought in and then the Address To A Haggis is recited. A the end of the poem a whiskey toast is proposed to the haggis.
  • The main supper is haggis and neeps (potatoes) followed by dessert, cheese and coffee.
  • Toasts are made to the monarch and Robert Burns as well as a toast to the lassie and laddies.
  • Robert burns song may be sung and the evening finished with the song Auld Lang Syne.
