Night Walks In The Countryside

I am lucky to live in the beautiful rural North Yorkshire countryside. There is nothing more enjoyable than a stroll up the lane as it starts to get dark. All the sounds seem to be magnified as the darkness falls and the creatures of the night start to emerge. Owls can be heard overhead, rustling in the hedgerows is commonplace as the smaller creatures seek out food in the safety of the darkness and the swooping of bats can be felt as you venture out after dark.

I was reading in the Telegraph about night walks in the countryside which encourages you "to expand your senses and take a walk on the dark side!"

Our farm, Valley View Farm, is located in a village called Old Byland. If you fancy a break away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life then a stay here is ideal where the pace can be as slow as you want. You can relax at the cottages or stroll around the village and neighbouring countryside and why not even venture out after dark for a stroll up the lane on a nightly walk.

Malham Cove - A Natural Wonder Of Britain

Have just been reading that Malham Cove has been voted Number 1 by readers of the Live For The Outdoors website as one of the top 7 natural wonders of Britain.

They describe Malham Cove as, "a beautiful natural sculpture of limestone at the head of a small valley."

I also recently asked on twitter what would be your best day out in Yorkshire and Anna Farmery from Engaging Brand said, "a walk in Malham Cove." Thanks Anna for your recommendation.

Malham Cove is located in the Yorkshire Dales and is an excellent place for walking. It is only an hour and 40 minutes drive from Old Byland so you could pack a picnic or even order a Hunters Of Helmsley Hamper for the trip.

Stranded Seal Pups Rescued In North Yorkshire

I have just been reading that three underweight seal pups have rescued from beaches across Yorkshire this August. All three seal pups were taken into care at Scarborough's Sealife & Marine Sanctuary.

The pups, named Bruges, Tokyo and Dallas were found to be suffering from worms which has contributed to their low weight. The pups are now being fed every four hours and will be released back into the wild when they are healthy.

Scarborough Sealife & Marine Sanctuary is a great place to visit to see the sealife of this area.

    Winter Breaks In North Yorkshire

One of my six stonebuilt Valley View Farm Cottages at Old Byland, near Helmsley would make an ideal base whilst you have a Winter break away. Here are some of the many activities and events that North Yorkshire has to offer throughout the winter months.

Walking Weekends – when you book a break during November, December, January and February you will get a free map of the walks in the National Parks.

    Pickering War Weekend
is the 16th – 18th of October. Learn about how we lived in the 1940’s with this reminiscent weekend, attend some of the events taking place either in Pickering or aboard the NYMR – great fun and informative too!

4X4 Weekends –Come and stay and have a thrilling weekend with all that the nearby Yorkshire 4 X 4 has to offer with off road thrills and adventures!

Shooting Weekends – Try your eye for accuracy with either rough shooting or clay pigeon shooting, either option can be arranged for you.

    Biking Weekends
    – Book a weekend with your friends and try one of the official MTB routes in the North Yorkshire Moors - maps can be downloaded in preparation for your stay.

Gliding Weekends – Stay at Old Byland and get a discount at Sutton Bank Flying Club when you book gliding through Valley View Farm Cottages.

Cosy weekends in November – Book a cosy weekend and a special treat awaits you - sloe gin and liqueur chocolates – from Sloe Motion a farm business based in York.

Bonfire Night – Come away with your pet for a quiet time at Old Byland, no loud noises here only peace and quiet awaits both you and your four legged friend/s.

December Breaks – Plan some time with your friends and family away from all the shopping and the ‘busyness’ of December with a quiet weekend and share a glass of mulled wine with our compliments. However……… for those of you who do want to shop there are plenty of opportunities to get that ‘special something’ with the unique shopping venues close by – Castle Howard is a lovely place to combine shopping and sightseeing.

    Forthcoming events

At the moment we are getting ready for harvesting and hoping that this spell of lovely weather holds, here is a picture of my son Stuart with the engineer making sure the combine is in good order for our forthcoming busy time.

I have also had notification through today of an event that is passing through Old Byland on the evening of 12th - 13th of September, with an approximate time of 2400 hours - somehow I do not think I will be awake for this, however there may be some of you out there that are interested in cars from a past era.

The event is organised by the Yorkshire Revival Navigational Rally and to be eligible the cars taking part need to be in the 60' or 70's with engines no larger than 2000cc. To see the route and further information go to:http://www.ilkleymotorclub.org.uk/yrr/route.htm

I am young enough to remember these cars........
