White Rose Awards - Finalists For Visitor Attraction Of The Year (Under 50,000 Visitors)

The White Rose Awards ceremony will take place on the evening of 19th October at the Royal Armouries in Leeds.

The White Rose Awards 2009 finalists for Visitor Attraction of the Year (under 50,000 visitors)

Barley Hall, York
British Waterways – Standedge Tunnel & Visitor Centre, Huddersfield
English Heritage – Rievaulx Abbey, Helmsley
Merchant Adventurers’ Hall, York
Ripley Castle, Ripley

I was delighted to see Rievaulx Abbey as one of the finalists. Rievaulx Abbey is under 3 miles from our farm and cottages in Old Byland. It is definately worth a visit and a very worthy finalist for the White Rose Awards 2009.

The Battle of Old Byland took place on the 12th October 1322 between the Scots and the English. This battle was part of the Wars of Scottish Independence. The Scots were victorious, led by Robert Bruce. The English king, Edward II was in residence at Rievaulx Abbey with Queen Isabella when the Scots advanced. The English troops led by John de Bretagne, Earl of Richmond where defeated leaving the king to flee the Abbey.

With a stay at Valley View Farm Cottages in Old Byland you can re-trace the steps of the Scots and and visit White Rose Awards finalist Rievaulx Abbey where the king had to flee.
