Guinea Fowl Eggs

I was recently given some guinea fowl eggs. These eggs are not as large as hen eggs but they are very flavoursome. The yolks are very yellowy orange and make great soft boiled eggs, although the shells are extremely hard. Guinea fowl eggs are also good to use for baking as they give a real golden colour to cakes, buns and yorkshire puddings.

Do you have a favourite type of egg you like to eat?

Rievaulx Terrace And Temples

Visit the Rievaulx Terrace and Temples where you can take leisurely walks and picnics.

The grass terrace spans half a mile and you can enjoy superb views over Rievaulx Abbey to Ryedale and the Hambleton Hill.

In the Spring and Summer months you can see the wild flowers that fill the terrace and adjoining wood.

There are two 18th century classical temples at either end of the terrace. The ceilings on the temples depict mythological scenes.

So why not make your base one of the Valley View Farm Cottages as you and plan a visit to Rievaulx Terrace and Temples which is only 2.8 miles by car. The National Trust have listed 25 things that make Britain great. Using comments from twitter they have complied a list with rockpools featuring at number one. Check out the full National Trust list of 25 things that make Britain great.

My suggestions when I saw their request on twitter were,
"The village produce show, the green, scenic countryside and beautiful old country houses makes Britain great."
So what do you think makes Britain great, leave a comment, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Bonfire Night 2009

Get planning ahead - Bonfire Night is officially the 5th November, although depending on what day the 5th of November is means that many places hold their actual bonfire and fireworks on days surrounding the actual day and you will usually find that many bonfires are over a weekend night where it gives the chance for more people to be able to attend.

Bonfire night usually involves a bonfire and burning a "guy" to represent Guy Fawkes and a firework display.

This year Bonfire Night is Thursday 5th November 2009, so get organised and plan ahead.

Pigs And Piglets On Neighbouring Farm

Pigs are one of my favourite farm animals and I couldn't resist taking these photos of the pigs and piglets on the farm up the road from us here at Valley View Farm.

The black and white pigs are the British Saddleback breed.

The pigs are enjoying rooting the grass in the field. Saddlebacks are a hardy breed so enjoy being outside. It looks like the piglets have some food in a trough which is separate from the sows. It seems that the farmer has put an electric fence up so that the sows can't eat the piglets food which is a good idea as the creep feed for piglets can make the sows have a poorly tummy if the sows eat it. The sows look like they are enjoying eating the grass.

The piglets only look a few weeks old - probably 4-6 weeks old at a guess.

What are your favourite farm animals? Do you have pigs and if so what is your favourite breed?

Bluebells In Woods

May is the time to see bluebells growing in British woodlands. These Spring flowers grow well at this time of year in wooded areas as the leaves haven't fully opened and the bluebells have access to the light.

There are a number of Woodland Trust woods throughout Yorkshire were you can walk for free and see the beautiful bluebells at this time of year.

  1. Hackfall , near Grewelthorpe, North Yorkshire.
  2. Harry's Folly, near Ravenscar, North Yorkshire.
There are many woods in North Yorkshire where you are likely to see bluebells, here are just a few.
  • Wood at Newton-under-Rosebury, near Great Ayton.
  • Ray Wood at Castle Howard.
  • Strid Woods near Bolton Abbey.
Thanks Judith for these lovely woodland bluebell photographs.

So if you fancy walking through Yorkshire woodlands and seeing the magnificent carpets of bluebells then why not make Valley View Farm your base. Aysgarth Falls

Aysgarth Falls is a spectacular waterfall situated in a lovely wooded gorge, on the River Ure within the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Near the village of Aysgarth, the River Ure tumbles over a series of broad limestone steps which are known as Aysgarth Falls.
The falls are a three flight waterfall and are one of Wensleydale's most famous beauty spots and were recently used as a location in the Kevin Costner film "Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves."

Take in the beauty of the falls with a pleasant riverside walk linking the Upper, Middle and Lower Falls.

There are well-signposted walks which wind through the wooded gorge, offering spectacular views and photo opportunities of the river and falls.

Nature lovers will also love this location as the area is carpeted in wild flowers in the Spring and Summer, and wild birds, squirrels and deer can often be seen amongst the trees.

Facilities - There is car parking at the Yorkshire Dales National Park Information Centre.

My thanks again go to Pauline for these beautiful photographs.

White Horse Near Kilburn

The white horse near Kilburn is a limestone hill figure that overlooks the village of Kilburn on the edge of the North york Moors. The horse is approximately 318 feet (97 metres) long by 220 ft (67 m) high and covers about 1.6 acres and is said to be the largest and most northerly in England.

The white horse was created in November 1857 by removing the topsoil and exposing the underlying limestone rock.
