Romantic Breaks At Valley View Farm Cottages

As one of my Ample Bosom staff, celebrates her 5th wedding anniversary (Congratulations Sara!) and talk turned in the office to how the occasion was to be celebrated, I thought about my cottages and which would make an ideal romantic break for a couple celebrating their wedding anniversary or Valentine's Day for that matter as it is fast approaching.

Two of the cottages are ideal romantic retreats.

Couch Cottage is a one bedroom cottage (sleeps 2) which opens onto a courtyard with an amazing view.

Form Cottage is a one bedroom ground floor cottage (sleeps 2) with a kingsize bed and a modern bathroom with bath and shower.

Flim-Flam

A news item that caught my attention last night regarding the proposal by the Government to have Broadband installed in all our homes, the person being questioned about this used a much underated word, in my opinion -'Flim-Flam' - meaning a swindle in which you cheat at gambling or persuade a person to buy a worthless property. The derivation of the term flim-flam man ( con artist) is debated, but may come from the 1930s law firm of Flam & Flam, lawyers of less-than-sterling repute in the immigrant neighborhood of 165 East 121st St. in New York City.
I watch and await the progression of this scheme with interest.

National Farmhouse Breakfast Week

This week is the National Farmhouse Breakfast Week celebrating and promoting the produce of farmers, there are some fabulous locally produced foods to be had in Yorkshire and one that can be taken for granted , so it was good to be reminded to add sausages and bacon to my shopping list today as I listened to Terry Wogan this morning enjoying a good 'fry up' - it's a tough life on the radio........

The Sun Is Shining And Snowdrops Are Here

I am not going to comment on the news today, it is getting far too depressing and I think we need to start focusing on the positives, not the recession which appears to now be of global proportions. The sun is shining here at Old Byland and the first open snowdrops have been spotted, there is much joy to be had from just observing the beauty of nature as we head towards Spring.

Researching Family Days Out And Special Offers For Valentines Day

I was doing some research yesterday into activities for family days out which are local to Old Byland, and not too costly - and some free - for the holiday season, it can mount up to a tidy sum when a family of four or five are out for the day. I will post these once I have a definitive list together.

I then heard of the lady in California who has given birth to octuplets and wondered how they are going to manage getting the children ready for a day out let alone the cost of it!

I am also getting some special offers ready for Valentines Day, so watch out for these on the website - some good news for your day.

Not the best start to the week

Driving to the farm this morning and trying to avoid some of the mad drivers intent on getting past everything in sight at breakneck speeds, I was very pleased to exit the A1 and start the climb up Sutton Bank I regained my composure and once again marvelled at the scenery - it is getting so much lighter earlier now - it is beautiful up here and I wonder how people who do not have this balance in life are coping with the news of more doom and gloom - job cuts at Corus, the knock on effect of redundancies, including the risk of violence at home and the innocent children caught in the cross fire, causing lifelong damage both emotionally and physically.
But lets not dwell on the sad side of life,I was heartened to read about the brave souls taking part in the Cold Water Swimming event last week - I cannot imagine going outside without several layers of clothing on let alone stripping off to next to nothing....

Recession - As if we did not already know!

So it is going to be announced today that our country is officially in recession as if we did not know this, however up here on the Yorkshire Moors we have a covering of snow and one of my more pressing concerns is the welfare of the lambs born on the farm this week, once again a promise of new growth which we could all do with

To Err Is Human - Barack Obama Retakes Oath

How refreshing that even the great and good can openly admit to making a mistake and correct it - Mr Obama has retaken his oath, to uphold the constitution of the United States, we all make mistakes but it is in the detail of the correction that determines the level of our humanity.

Wednesday 21 January 2009

Barack Obama

The inauguration of Barack Obama has generated an air of excitement and hopefulness of change for the USA, great things are expected and I wish him every success. Here in Old Byland we too are hopeful but for different reasons, the first shoots of the snowdrops are coming through, the sun is shining and despite the gloomy news of the latest redundancies, an expectation that Spring is not far away is reason enough to give me hope of better things to come.

Visit To Highgrove To Meet Prince Charles

As a member of the WFU (Women's Farming Union) I was thrilled and delighted to have the opportunity to visit Highgrove to meet Prince Charles last year.

We had a tour of the gardens whilst Prince Charles chatted to as many of the WFU as he could get to speak to. I was lucky enough to have a chat with him and we even shared a few jokes whilst sipping our drinks.

The tour of the beautiful gardens was followed by lunch in the Orchard Rooms. It was a memorable day at Highgrove and a great honour to meet Prince Charles.
