Osmotherley Show

On Saturday 4th August the Osmotherley Show will be held at Home Farm, near Northallerton.  This Agricultrual show will include ponies, cattle, sheep, sheep dog trials, horticulture, childrens classes, trade and craft stands.

The Osmotherley Band will be playing at the show and it promises to be a fun family day out.

There are several country fairs which are held throughout North Yorkshire each year.  You can keep track of events by following our blog or checking out our 'What To See & Do' page on our website.  Valley View Farm will give you a taste of farm life when you stay in one of our holiday cottages so why not tie in a visit to a local agricultural fair to get a real feel for the countryside life.

Thornton Le Dale Show


The Thornton Le Dale Show will be held on Wednesday 8th August and promises to be a fun packed day suitable for all the family.

The show is very popular locally and considered to be one of the friendliest of the Country's traditional village shows.  Starting at 9am the show continues well into the evening with shows from working terriers, lurchers, junior show jumping, children's fancy dress, sports, tug of war and many more.  There are long established classes for cattle, sheep, pigs, goats and horses.  Approximately 150 trophies are to be won in over 450 classes. 

Traditional rural crafts feature prominently and Made in Yorkshire will present their popular Craft Marquee.

Tockwith Show - August 2012

The Tockwith Show is a traditional country show with a high reputation within the county.  This year the show will be held on Sunday 5th August.

The main displays will be of working rural crafts alongside a Farmers Market.

Outdoor Theatre at Castle Howard presents Black Beauty

Black Beauty will be brought to life at Castle Howard in their contemporary open-air theatre production.  Held on 26 & 27th July it even offers an opportunity to meet a 'real life' Black Beauty in the pre-theatre workshop.

The first 20 minutes of the production will be performed in the promenade, providing a perfect setting to get you into the feel of the story.

National Parks Events Week. 30th July - 5th August 2012.

Theres loads of fun to be had with the National Parks Events Week.  Heres whats going on at our local centre, The Moors National Park Centre, Danby.

Painting With Watercolours, Monday 30th July.
- Paint the beautiful landscapes around the park centre

Felt Decorated Bags, Monday 30th July
- Decorate a fabric bag using paint, felt and embroidery.

Magnificent Minibeasts, Wednesday 1st August
- Explore the world of mini beasts using special glasses.

Shelter Building, Friday 3rd August
- Work in teams to build shelters and learn about their construction

An Introduction to Bushcraft, Friday 3rd August
- Learn how to make fire and have a safe and responsible campfire

National Park Animalympic Games, Sunday 5th August
- A fun day full of events including egg & spoon and crab scuttle.

York Maze - Season Now Open

The York Maze has just opened it's door again for summer.  The Maze is created from over 1 million living growing Maize plants.   It covers an area larger than 10 Wembley football pitches, which makes it the largest Maze in Britain.

As Maize is an annual plant the Maze design is re-designed each year, so visitors will enjoy getting lost again every summer!

There are lots of other fun family activities now on site including an obstacle course, pig racing, water wars, crazy golf, quad bikes and many more.

The Ryedale Show - July 2012

This year will be the 146th Ryedale Show on Tuesday 31st July.  The Ryedale show was established in 1855 and has become renowned for its very high standard of livestock and trade stands that attend in growing numbers each year.

The show offers something for all the family and prides itself on offering great value for money with a full and varied day of entertainment.  There are eight rings running throughout the day exhibiting prime cattle, horses, sheep, pigs, goats and more.  There are around 200 trade stands each year with many having been exhibiting for at least 10 years.

Yorkshire Welcome Event, July 2012

The Yorkshire Welcome Event was set up to celebrate everything 'Yorkshire'.  Held in Thirsk on 28 & 29th July it is a build up to Yorkshire Day on August 1st.

The event is a great combination of food, drinks and crafts with something for everyone.  There will also be special evening entertainment during the evenings of the 27th & 28th.

Malton Show - July 2012

The Malton Show will run on Sunday 22nd July this year.

The main attractions include a fun dog show, sheep, cattle, horticulture and horses.  The main arena will offer grand attractions and parades throughout the day.  There will be a children's area and crafts stands so all the family will be entertained.

Pickering War Weekend 2012 - Book now!


This years Pickering War Weekend will take place on the 12, 13 and 14 October 2012. So get organised as this is a very popular event and accommodation gets booked up quickly.


The Pickering War Weekend gives you the chance to revisit the past and wartime England, learning about Pickering and the surrounding villages in the way they were in the 1940s.

Events begin at noon on Friday when the flag is raised.  Saturday sees processions in the High Street, military vehicles, singers, bands and 40s style evening dresses.  The evenings host nostalgic dancing and musical fun.

The railway stations are taken over with Levisham becoming occupied France and Goathland defended by The Home Guard. It is a popular and fun event which is growing each year.



The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is just a 30 minute drive from Valley View Farm in Old Byland, so why not stay at one of our 4 star self catering cottages and journey back in time to wartime England and learn how the railways played their part in history.

York Markets - July

York often hosts special markets throughout the year.  This July there is a Summer Crafts Market from 12 - 15th July.   This specialist market showcases the best crafts from in and around the city.

Each month there is a Farmers Market where growers or producers from within 40 miles of York come together to sell direct to the public.  All produce sold on the York Farmers market have either been grown, reared, caught, brewed, pickled, baked, smoked or processed by the smallholder themselves.  This months Farmers Market will be held on 27th July.

The Newgate shoppers market runs 7 days a week with over 100 retailers to provide for all shopping needs.
