Jorvik Viking Festival York February 2011

The Vikings are back! - Jorvik Viking Festival, York - 19th - 27th Feb 2011.
Join the action as hundreds of Vikings from across the world descend on York for this annual festival.

This year will be the 26th annual Viking Festival in York.

Events will include;
  • lectures,
  • arts & crafts,
  • encampments,
  • river events,
  • saga-telling,
  • re-enactments of battle drills and training routines,
  • and full-scale battle re-enactments.
I have read on the Yorkshire.com website that,
"The Festival in 2011 will revisit the events of the early 11th century, a time when King Ethelred sat on the English throne and struggled for survival in the face of repeated Danish invasions. His ally, the Viking Olaf Haraldsson, will lead the fight against the Danes in the spectacular Festival battle finale on Saturday 26th February, which will see hundreds of armed warriors clash, before a fiery climax featuring fireworks and a boat burning at Bustardthorpe Fields, York Racecourse.
If you have an interest in history or just enjoy visiting York, then the Jorvik Viking Festival is for you and your family."

Whitby Abbey Voted A Romantic Ruin

Whitby Abbey has been voted Britain's most romantic ruin in a poll by Countryfile Magazine.

So why not visit Whitby Abbey for the Valentine's weekend.

Whitby Abbey is an English Heritage site and "possibly the most famous Abbey ruin in the
world." Whitby Abbey is an impressive ruin and stands majestically tall over the interesting and bustling town of Whitby.

Whitby has so much to offer and is one of my favourite places to visit. Click on this link for more information about Whitby. Don't forget to try the fish and chips whilst you're there! The beautiful Whitby Abbey is steeped in history and the ghostly tales of Dracula make it a spell binding place to visit.

Vintage Vehicle Weekend 2011

I have just been reading that the Vintage Vehicle Weekend is from the 9th July at 8:00 til the 10th July at 18:00 at Pickering, where you will see an excellent display of classic and vintage motor vehicles along the railway.

Pickering and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is just a 30 minute drive from Valley View Farm in Old Byland, so why not stay at one of our 4 star self catering cottages and spend a day at the Vintage Vehicle Weekend.
