Signs Of Deer

I love to see deer around the countryside where I live.

There are a number of signs to look out for when deer spotting.
  • Footprints in soft ground. Deer are cloven-hooved like sheep and goats.
  • Fresh droppings are also a sign that deer are near. Their dung is made up of brown or black pellets the size of peas.
  • Ragged edges on leaves as the deer graze the leaves.
  • Scarred tree bark where the male deer have rubbed their heads against trees and bushes, leaving the bark frayed and bush damaged.
  • Big scrapes in the ground where the male is marking out his territory.
  • Deer beds where the deer rest and are usually surrounded by plants or shrubs to protect the deer from rain or snow.
  • Antlers are shed once a year, so if you are very lucky you may find one or even a pair.

Let me know if you have seen any deer lately.
Why not treat yourself to a break away and come to Valley View Farm in North Yorkshire where you can discover the many delights of the wildlife of the beautiful countryside surrounding my farm.
