Yorkshire Museum of Farming re-opens this weekend!

The Yorkshire Museum of Farming re-opens this weekend of 31st March and 1st April for the season.

The 16 acre site holds a range of events and activities throughout the year based at Murton Park just outside of York.

This weekend the museum celebrates Country Crafts from a bygone age.  The attractions and activities will include; pottery, metalwork, leatherwork, woodwork, spinning and weaving.  It's also an opportunity to see the new Spring livestock.  All visitors to the museum this weekend will be able to enjoy a free ride on the Derwent Valley Light Railway to celebrate the opening of the season.

English Heritage Events - April

There are several English Heritage sites to visit in North Yorkshire.  Here are some of the things going on throughout April.

Rievaulx Abbey, 7 - 9th April - Medieval Falconry.  Watch a spectacular bird of prey display and learn about their use during the medieval period.

Whitby Abbey, 6-9th April - Easter Family Fun Trail. Complete the trail to be awarded a special Easter prize.

York Cold War Bunker, 16th April - Free Guided Tour for Members See original artefacts and learn about the part the bunker played during the Cold War.

Helmsley Castle 23rd April - Archaeology Store Tour.  Free guided tour to view the archaeological collection.

Clifford Tower, York 21 - 22nd April - Dragon Family Fun Trail. Help St George find the dragons for a prize.

York Chocolate Festival 6 - 9th April 2012

York is well known for it's history with the confectionery and chocolate industry.  Many of York's residents have had family that once worked in the dynasties of Rowntree, Terrys and Cravens.  Today the Nestle Chocolate Factory still creates one million Kit Kats a day.

The York Chocolate Festival held over Easter weekend, boasts an exciting program of dinners, workshops, tastings, lectures and Easter Egg hunts.  Parliament Street will host a mouthwatering market filled with chocolate traders offering delights from biscuits and cakes to luxury hand made chocolates.

Beningbrough Hall - Batty about Bats!

Love bats or maybe you know nothing about them and are interested to learn more?  A special walk will take place on Sunday 1st April at Beningbrough Hall.  You will be led around at dusk to uncover the fascinating creatures.  So if you're thinking of visiting Beningbrough Hall then make sure you book onto this special event.

Open Farm Sunday 2012

Open Farm Sunday is organised by Leaf (Linking Environment and Farming) and will be held on Sunday 17th June.


Farms across the UK will be opening their farm gates to visitors and running events and activities throughout the day to show case their farms and farming practices.


Although Valley View Farm is not publicly opening its gates this year on Open Farm Sunday, a stay at our Valley View Farm Cottages at any time of year will give you an insight on our family run farm of sheep and arable land.

Yorkshire Game Fair 2012

The Yorkshire Game Fair will be held at Stockeld Park near Wetherby on 26 & 27th May.

The Yorkshire Game Fair is in its 5th year and is home to several competitions like casting, dog shows, racing, day shooting, scurries and the Yorkshire Super Dog Competition. There is somethings for everyone at the show with a popular specialist shopping area offering a range of gifts, crafts, clothing and homewards. There will be also be a food pavilion full of delicious local produce.

New additions to this years show include;
- Countryside family adventure area
- The field kitchen
- The 2012 UK working whipper championship
- The Yorkshire super puppy championship
- The gundog clinic

Pickering War Weekend - Book now!


This years Pickering War Weekend will take place on the 12, 13 and 14 October 2012. So get organised as this is a very popular event and accommodation gets booked up quickly.

The Pickering War Weekend gives you the chance to revisit the past and wartime England, learning about Pickering and the surrounding villages in the way they were in the 1940s.

Events begin at noon on Friday when the flag is raised.  Saturday sees processions in the High Street, military vehicles, singers, bands and 40s style evening dresses.  The evenings host nostalgic dancing and musical fun.

The railway stations are taken over with Levisham becoming occupied France and Goathland defended by The Home Guard. It is a popular and fun event which is growing each year.



The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is just a 30 minute drive from Valley View Farmin Old Byland, so why not stay at one of our 4 star self catering cottages and journey back in time to wartime England and learn how the railways played their part in history.

North Yorkshire County Show 2012

The North Yorkshire County show will be held on Sunday 17th June at Otterington Hall near Northallerton.

The show offers something for everyone and all you would expect from a country fair.  There will be exciting attractions including bungee trampolines, traction engines, classic cars, cattle, sheep, poultry, rabbits, ferrets, country per suits, horticulture, arts, crafts & photography.  There will be a Yorkshire Food Marquee, Craft Marquee and variety of trade stands to keep visitors occupied.

Harrogate Flower Show 2012

The Harrogate Flower Show falls on 26 - 29th April this year and is the biggest independant gardening event in the UK.


There will be beautiful show gardens and plant nurseries to inspire, a shopping opportunity of garden related products, unique gifts, crafts and specialist food.  This April event hosts the largest floral art marquee in the country with over 160 individual staged works of art.


A Kitchen Garden team will be there to offer advice on growing fruit and vegetables at home and experts chef's will present ideas of turning the produce into delicious dishes.  As usual the Garden Roadshow and Garden Advice Bureau will also be on hand.

The Duncombe Park Country Fair falls on 4th June bank holiday Monday.

Attractions at the fair include:

Great Yorkshire Show 10 - 12th July 2012

The Great Yorkshire Show is an agricultural show which takes place annually on the Great Yorkshire Showground in July in the spa town of Harrogate, North Yorkshire. It is organised and run by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society (YAS). 

The Great Yorkshire Show returns for the 154th time this July.  Held over three days here is just a few things going on:

- Livestock Judging
- Fashion Show
- Sheep Shearing Competitions

Wednesday
- The Ukranian Cossaks display
- Falconry Displays

Thursday
- Ripon Select Foods Cock o'the North Show Jumping
- Cattle Parade
