The Scarecrow At Le Mont d'Ambazac

A friend who likes to be known as The Scarecrow has moved out to France and is living a life of self sufficiency on a 7 acre smallholding with a budget of just over £3000 to cover all her costs!

If you would like to read about her antics then you can find her on The Cottage Smallholder Forum.

The Scarecrow has asked me to go out and visit her in France, but at the moment we are in the middle of harvest, the cottages are busy and my lingerie company, Ample Bosom is soon to launch a new website, so for the time being I will be staying put in our lovely village of Old Byland.

Turners Trails, Yorkshire Fountains Abbey

Are you interested in art? Then why not come to Yorkshire and follow the Turner Trails to see where Turner, one of Britain's greatest landscape artists, visited and painted and sketched.

I have read on the Yorkshire.com website that Turner visited Fountains Abbey on his first trip to Yorkshire in 1797......He made three detailed pencil sketches (two with watercolour) in two large sketchbooks that he carried with him and then during the following winter developed a watercolour to exhibit at the Royal Academy in the spring. Turner revisited Fountains Abbey in 1816 and made a number of sketches on that occasion and a watercolour of the base of Abbot Huby's tower."

[07.09.08+282.JPG]

Why not follow in Turner's footsteps and visit Fountains Abbey and for those of you with an artistic streak, why not paint or sketch the Abbey as Turner did all those years ago!

So why not make your base one of the Valley View Farm Cottages and plan a visit to Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal Water Gardens. Turner Trails, Yorkshire, Aysgarth Falls

Turner was one of Britain's greatest landscape artists and he visited many places in Yorkshire throughout his life and many scenes of Yorkshire can be seen in his work.

I have read on the Yorkshire.com website that "Turner visited Aysgarth on 28 July 1816 when making illustrations for 'A General History of the County of York' by Thomas Dunham Whitaker. He probably stayed that night in Aysgarth Village."

Why not follow in Turner's footsteps and visit Aysgarth Falls and for those of you with an artistic streak, why not paint or sketch the Falls as Turner did back in 1816!

Glorious Twelfth - Grouse Shooting Season Begins

Well today marks the start of the shooting season, when shooting parties take to the moorlands. This mainly takes place in Scotland where the grouse is predominantly found, however the moors of Yorkshire are also a popular place to go shooting for pheasant and grouse. I was reading in the Yorkshire Post how game shooting which has previously been seen as a male dominated past-time, is becoming more popular with women.

If you are interested in country pursuits then why not take a break here at Valley View Farm as we are ideally situated for outdoor activities.

You can also take part in a seasonal pheasant shoot at Duncombe Park between 1st September and 1st February.

Booking essential: call 01751 472771 or book at the Visitor Centre.

Here at Valley View Farm we are just a 50 minute drive from Dalby Forest, so why not book a stay in our self catering holiday cottages whilst the children learn some bushcraft skills!

We still have availability during August so take a look and book online.
