Farndale Daffodils

I always feel that Spring has sprung when the daffodils arrive and although a little later this year, I am pleased to say that the daffodils are now flowering. If you would like to see a good show of daffodils then why not visit the beautiful village of Farndale this April when the landscape will be adorned with a beautiful carpet of wild daffodils.

I have read on the Farndale website that, "The warm weather last week has brought the Daffies on and they are now at their best and dependant on weather, and temperature should remain so for the next two to three weeks."

So if you are visiting this area then the Farndale daffodils are well worth a visit at this time of year.

It is believed that the daffodils were first brought to Farndale by some medieval monks from Rievaulx.

In the village you will be able to buy some daffodils but picking the wild daffodils is prohibited. For those of you who enjoy walking then take the Farndale Daffodil walk through the stunning Yorkshire countryside.

The Farndale daffodil walk is a moderate walk of approximately 7.1 miles. Click on this link for more information about the Farndale daffodil walk.

Easter Fair Duncombe Park 24th-25th April 2011

Great Yorkshire Show 12th-14th July 2011

The Great Yorkshire Show is an agricultural show which takes place annually on the Great Yorkshire Showground in July in the spa town of Harrogate, North Yorkshire. It is organised and run by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society (YAS). This year the show will take place from 12th to 14th July 2011.

This year the Great Yorkshire Show is in its 153rd year and as always will be a celebration of agriculture and country life.

Come along and you will see plenty of:

• animals,
• country demonstrations,
  
• have-a-go activities,
• the Great Yorkshire Cheese & Dairy Show,

English Heritage Events At Whitby Abbey 2011

Just wanted to let you know about some of the English Heritage events taking place at Whitby Abbey this year.

• Whitby Abbey can claim to be the place where our English Easter was born, as it was here in 664AD that the Synod of Whitby agreed to follow the system that we use to this day to decide when Easter falls. But there’s more to this evocative ruin than eggs, bunnies and theological small print.
• Whitby has inspired creative spirits from the 7th century poet-monk Caedmon to the 19th century novelists Elizabeth Gaskell and Bram Stoker, as well as contemporary chiller-writer G.P. Taylor. Read more about Whitby Abbey’s role as an inspiration for authors and poets in Whitby Abbey: Pure Inspiration. Available from Whitby Abbey’s gift shop and from online retailers it is the perfect companion for a visit to this ancient Gothic place of worship.
• In May, visitors will get the chance to visit the Abbey at twilight (in conjunction with The Museums at Night) for a unique evening perspective (Fri 13 – Sat 14 May).
  
• The knights of the realm prepare to battle in Courtly Combat at the end of May n a Tournament of Foote (Sat 28 – Mon 30 May).
  
• Are you brave enough to hear tales of torture, and face your punishment in the stocks this summer with Time Travellers GO… Gruesome and Gruesome Weekends (Sat 23 Jul – Mon 29 Aug weekends only) throughout the summer at Whitby Abbey?

English Heritage Events At Rievaulx Abbey 2011

Just wanted to let you know about some of the English Heritage events taking place at Rievaulx Abbey this year.

• Join the costumed Victorian falconers for spectacular aerial displays of Birds of Prey in flight in the abbey ruins at Easter (Sun 24 – Mon 25 Apr).
  
• A 17th century wedding takes place amidst the civil war (Sat 30 Apr – Mon 2 May). Will it be a happy ending for the newly weds or will the Royalists and Parliamentary forces tear them apart?
  
• A labyrinth walk at the abbey in May and June (Sat 28 May – Sun 5 Jun) is followed by evening celebrations as costumed characters create a welcoming evening atmosphere(Fri 3 – Sat 4 Jun).
• Medieval Crafts and Pastimes take over the abbey every weekend in July (Sat 2 – Sun 31 Jul weekends only).
  
• During the school summer holidays look out for the herbs planted around the abbey and discover how they would have been used by the medieval monks (Sat 23 Jul – Mon 29 Aug).

Rievaulx Abbey is only about 2.8 miles from Valley View Farm Cottages so why not make Valley View Farm your base and then enjoy some of the great activities and events that Rievaulx Abbey has to offer.

York Festival of Science and Technology 11th March 2011

During the week, science will be coming out of the classroom and popping up in all sorts of unexpected places across York. There will be exhibitions, lectures, film screenings, live performances and a host of hands-on activities.

The Festival programme includes special workshops for schools, events focused on an adult audience, and a wide range of activities for the whole family to enjoy.

Mausoleum Tour At Castle Howard March 2011

Why not go on a Mausoleum Tour with the Curator at Castle Howard on Saturday 19th March 2011.

The tour is lead by Castle Howard Curator, Dr Christopher Ridgway and also includes a visit to the Temple of the Four Winds which is not normally open to the public.

This tours last 2-21/2 hrs and some parts of the walk are over uneven ground so sensible footwear is recommended.

David Hockney's Bigger Trees Near Water At York

For all you art lovers out there, there is a unique chance to see David Hockney's largest painting in York in the coming months. 'Bigger Trees Near Warter' is on loan to York Art Gallery from the Tate.

It comprises of 50 individual canvas panels and takes inspiration from a site at Warter in the Yorkshire Wolds.

The exhibition runs from 12th February to 12th June.
