Viking Activities In York February Half Term 2012

York is famous for it's Viking heritage and there are plenty of Viking activities to keep the children occupied this February half term at the Yorkshire Museum.

• Viking Belts and Braces! -13 - 17 February, 10.30am - 12.30pm and 1.30pm - 4pm Come and try your hand at Viking fashion and design. See how the Vikings accessorised. Have a go at designing your own belt. Make it from leather and plait it from wool and then you can even wear it home. Be inspired by the objects on display and take a close look at the the decoration and design on Viking artefacts.
• Make a Viking Long Boat - 13 and 14 February, 10.30am - 12.30pm and 1.30pm - 4pm Why not join artist Mary Passeri who will be making a full-size Viking Longboat and decorating it with printed patterns. After the 15th February - once the longboat has been made visitors can dress up and play at being a Viking, navigating their way across the seas.
• Viking Astronomy Talk - 15 February, 3.30pm - 4pm Find out more about what the Vikings saw in the night sky.

Yorkshire Museum October Half Term Activities

One of the activities taking place at the Yorkshire Museum this half term is Alphabet Twister
on the 25th, 26th and 28th October, 10.30am - 12.30pm and 1.30pm - 4pm

Join the drop-in sessions during the half-term holiday. Add colour and play with the "Alphabet Twister" game. Then design a medieval tile featuring your own initials.

Fossils: Excavate a life-sized ichthyosaur and learn more about rocks and fossils with a handling session. Make a plaster fossil.

Crafts: Get hands on with clay with our historic potter and make a colourful insect from modelling clay.

Children's Events At Yorkshire Museum 3rd August 2011

Why not bring the children along to Yorkshire Museum on Wednesday 3rd August 2011 from 11am til 3pm for some interesting and fun activities.

Weather: Look at the sun safely through a solar telescope and explore the Observatory, learn about different types of clouds and what weather to expect from them, find out about the effect the sun has.

Wildlife: Talk to a bat expert - get up close and personal with live specimens. See moths and butterfly specimens close up. Look at bird skulls and learn how they have adapted to their environment.

Crafts: Make badges and bird masks.

Yorkshire Museum Half Term Events May & June 2011

Yorkshire Museum have some great activities for the May half term.

The giant ichthyosaur fossil is back on display in the Extinct gallery and some of the half term activities are inspired by the giant ichthyosaur fossil.

There will be a fossil sculpture activity from the 28th - 31st May from 11am - 1pm and 2pm - 4pm. Children will get to use junk materials to piece together a full-sized copy of the ichthyosaur and make your own fossil cast to take home.

Children will also get the chance to invent their own sea monster from the Stories of the Deep activity taking place from the 1st to 5th June from 11am - 1pm and 2pm - 4pm.
