- The garden dates from 1758.
- The setting is beautiful and is set against the backdrop of Helmsley Castle in the grounds of Duncombe Park.
- The garden was originally built to supply the Duncombe estate with fruit, vegetables and cut flowers.
- The vegetables, herbs, seasonal fruits and a wide range of plants, including many rare species, are all for sale.
- Picnics can be enjoyed in the garden.
- The Helmsley Walled Garden is open daily between mid March and the end of October. They are closed at weekends during January, February and November.
- Admission costs for 2008 £4.00 adult, £3.00 concessions and children free.
- The garden is also home to the Vinehouse Cafe. The café is situated in the newly restored Victorian Vinery where you can sit beneath the vine arches or out on the terrace and enjoy a tasty selection of treats.

Helmsley Castle
- Helmsley castle dates back to the 12/13th century.
- The medieval castle ruins are surrounded by ditches and banks.
- The ruins include the West Tower and a Tudor Mansion.
- The initial castle was built by Walter Espec until he died and then was continued by the de Roos family.
- The castle came under siege during the Civil War.
- There is a visitor centre on site so that you can learn more about the history of the castle.

All Saints Church, Old Byland
It seems that a church has stood in Old Byland since Saxon times. The present church building takes much of it's style from the Norman period. Interesting features include the Anglo-Saxon sundial, the Norman winged horses and horned head carvings.
All Saints church is situated in the village of Old Byland and is popular with walkers and ramblers as it is an interesting historical site and a welcome rest site with help yourself refreshments available.

Battle Of Old Byland
The Battle of Old Byland took place on the 12th October 1322 between the Scots and the English. This battle was part of the Wars of Scottish Independence. The Scots were victorious, led by Robert Bruce. The English king, Edward II was in residence at Rievaulx Abbey with Queen Isabella when the Scots advanced. The English troops led by John de Bretagne, Earl of Richmond where defeated leaving the king to flee the Abbey.

Valley View Farm Cottages - Floor Plans
Drey Cottage is a two bedroom cottage (sleeps 4) with one double and one twin bedroom. Both rooms have en-suite facilities. The double bedroom has a shower and the twin room has a bath. This cottage can connect to Holt Cottage to make a 10-person family cottage.
Formicary Cottage is a compact one bedroom ground floor cottage with twin beds and an en-suite bathroom with bath and shower. There is a breakfast bar area and the living room also has a double sofa bed. Sleeps 2-4.

Duncombe Park
Duncombe Park is the home of Lord and Lady Feversham. The house, grounds and parkland are open to the public from March through to October. Check the website for specific dates and opening times.
The house dates back to the early 18th century. Visitors can see the Great House, the Stone Hall, the Saloon, the Dining Room, the Library, the Ladies Withdrawing Room as well as the Yellow Bedroom and Dressing Room and the French Bedroom and Dressing Room.
The gardens cover about 35 acres and include a great lawn and level terraces, temples, yew trees, woodlands and a scented 'secret garden' around the old conservatory.
The parkland covers 400 acres of land and includes a Nature Reserve and you can explore woodlands, a river valley and meadows with walks and trails through the parklands.

- The treasure hunt requires no prior knowledge of Helmsley as all clues are solved by observation.
- Both young and old can enjoy the hunt and solving the clues.
- A map is supplied just in case you get lost.
- The answers are at the back of the book so you can check any unsolved clues before you leave.
- The route is suitable for wheelchair users although there are some kerbs which are not dropped.
- A hunt will take one to two hours to complete however they can easily take 1/2 or even a full day if stops are made along the way.

Winter Pursuits Near Helmsley
- 4 x 4 Driving and Quad Bike Trails at Langdale End near Scarborough.
