I enjoy a trip out to the Great Yorkshire Show, which will take place this year at the Great Yorkshire Showground on Tuesday 14th July 2009 til Thursday 16th July 2009.

As a farmer's wife and a North Yorkshire holiday cottage owner that welcomes dogs and in light of the recent tragic news of the dog walker killed by cows, I would like to let dog owners who are planning on visiting the North York Moors know that there is a leaflet published by the North York Moors National Park giving guidance and advice about walking your dog on the North York Moors.

Runswick Bay Picked As A Favourite Secret Beach By BBC Coast Presenter

Runswick Bay has been picked as a favourite secret beach by the BBC's Coast presenter Miranda Krestovnikoff.

In the Times Online article of 20 secret beaches in the British Isles, Miranda describes Runswick Bay as, "Sheltered by the lofty crag of Lingrow Knowle, Runswick Bay is a tranquil spot, a welcome stretch of sand on what is otherwise a walker’s coast. While it comes to life during the summer months, in winter it is a peaceful spot for a bit of beachcombing, with rocky outcrops where you’ll find fossils aplenty."

Yorkshire Attractions Included In Britains Best 50 Days Out

I have just read the Times Online feature on Britains Best 50 Days Out and am pleased to see that there are some Yorkshire attractions listed in their top 50.

At number 27 they feature Bridlington's Yorkshire Belle - "A voyage on Bridlington’s Yorkshire Belle is always a thrill, but you can get twice as many nautical miles for your money by studying the tide tables. A two-hour trip costs £6/£3, but if you time your visit to coincide with a full-moon tide, Cap’n Peter Richardson will take you all the way to Filey Bay — a 3½-hour round trip — for the same price."

At number 28 they feature the York Maze - "York Maze, made from 1.5m maize plants, is reputed to be the biggest on earth. The new design, opening on July 18, is a closely guarded secret, but the owner, Tom Pearcy, offers a clue: “It concerns an anniversary about which there is something of a buzz,” he says cryptically. A family ticket costs £28."

Invited For Radio Interview With Maurice Boland On Talk Radio Europe

I am delighted to tell you that I have been invited for a telephone interview by Maurice Boland for Talk Radio Europe.

Talk Radio Europe is Spain’s largest English speaking radio station broadcasting to approximately half a million listeners. They have a weekly enterprise program where they feature entrepreneurs who have built up successful companies and this is the part of the show they want to interview me for! They will no doubt want to talk to me about my lingerie business amplebosom.com which is fast approaching it's tenth year!

The interview will be at 11.45am on Wednesday 1st July. I'll let you know how I get on and when it will be broadcast.

The Cleveland Way National Trail Celebrates 40th Anniversary

This year, The Cleveland Way, celebrates it's 40th anniversary as it was first opened in 1969.

The 110 mile trail takes you through a variety of landscapes in the beautiful North York Moors National Park. It's starting point is the quaint and bustling market town of Helmsley and the trail takes you across heather moorland before reaching the coast at Saltburn. Butterflies In The Garden

What butterflies have you spotted in your garden or round and about recently?

I was prompted to ask this as I thumbed through the beautiful photographs of butterflies sent into the guardian flickr group and then looked out from my kitchen window at the beautiful rural North Yorkshire landscape that sees an array of wildlife including butterflies.I often see:

• the Red Admiral butterfly
• the Peacock butterfly (pictured)
  
• the Small Cabbage White butterfly

I sometimes see:

• the Comma butterfly
• the Small Tortoiseshell butterfly
• the Wall Brown butterfly
• the Speckled Wood butterfly

Unusual Containers For Growing Veg

John and I like to grow our own veg when we get the time and I know that some people will grow their veg in unusual containers especially if they are short of space. However I would never have thought of using my old bra or John's underpants! But it seems that some gardeners from the Ramsey Horticultural Society are doing just that, well not using my bras or Johns underpants, but using donated bras, pants and boxer shorts.

Georgie Webb of the Royal Horticultural Society said, 'Due to their conical shape, bras are ideal containers for turning into hanging baskets, and if you sew two together you have what is best described as a "hanging bra-sket." Once filled with compost you can grow salad leaves, herbs, alpine strawberries and even tumbling cherry tomatoes in them.'

There was even debate as to which type of bras would make the best growing container.

North Yorkshire Open Studios 2009

During the last two weekends in June (20th, 21st, 26th, 27th & 28th June) artists across North Yorkshire invite you into their studios to see their artwork. The work on show will range from stained glass, furniture, jewellery and photography to sculpture, paintings and ceramics.

This will be a great opportunity to see rich and diverse creative talent in and across the beautiful North Yorkshire landscape.

Events include exhibitions, talks and seminars as well as workshops so there really is something for everyone.

Scalby Fair And Flower Festival

Scalby Fair and Flower Festival is on this week (14th - 21st June 2009). The main event is on Saturday, the Scalby Fair Day, which is now in it's 32nd year.

This year's theme is "By The Seaside" and the fair will have over 50 stalls and displays along with a full programme of entertainment on Saturday afternoon including Morris dancing and a fancy dress competition. The flower arrangements from the flower festival will be on display and can be seen all weekend.

National Bike Week June 2009

This week is National Bike Week, 13-21 June 2009, so get on your bike!

The Bike Week website states, "Bike Week is the UK's largest mass participation cycling event and provides an annual opportunity to promote cycling as a source of fitness and fun, not to mention an alternative form of transport. This year, Bike Week 2009 is encouraging everyone to 'get more out of life'- by getting on your bikes, exploring your local community and finding out just how convenient cycling is for all those short trips we make each day."

The website gives five reasons to get on your bike:
1. Over half of UK car journeys are less than 5 miles – swapping them for an easy 30 minute bike ride can save you a small fortune in fuel costs
2. Cyclists live on average at least two years longer than non-cyclists and their fitness levels are equivalent to being ten years younger – so forget nip and tuck, think pedal and push!
3. Cycling is the ultimate family activity; it’s free, healthy, fun and encourages children to be independent
4. Cycling gets you out and about and you’re more likely to find that beautiful park you never knew existed than when you’re cooped up in a car
5. In a hurry? During rush-hour, a bicycle is twice as fast as a car - good if you hate traffic jams! Even better, you won’t spend a penny on parking.

Radio 4

I have just been listening to You and Yours on the radio, they were talking about cheap hotels and holidays, looking out of the window across the moors, I can also thoroughly recommend a stay here at Valley View Farm, it is a lovely place to visit for children and adults alike, plenty of places to visit, close at hand but far enough away to get some well deserved peace and quiet.

Sheep Shearing at Valley View

Now the lambs are all here and gamboling in the fields very happily, the next busy time is shearing the sheep.

John and Stuart can be seen hard at it whilst we have this lovely weather at the moment, although the mothers and their lambs do not take too kindly to being separated - even for short time while 'Mum' gets a haircut, and it can get very noisy while they call for each other!


The sheep in the photo is a North Country Mule and a good hardy breed for up here on the moors, there is still a small amount of availability in August for the cottages, so come and have a look at the sheep when they will be looking their best!

Leventhorpe Vineyard - An Excellent Vineyard To Visit In Yorkshire

Leventhorpe Vineyard has been described as an excellent vineyard to visit and one of my staff has been and said it was interesting to see the vines, talk to the owner about the issues of growing grapes in the North of England and sample the wine which was very palatable (sorry don't know all the wine lingo). They bought some after their tasting to sample back at home - a sure sign that the wine was good.

The 5 acre vineyard is situated within the boundaries of the City of Leeds and is currently (I believe) England's most northerly commercial vineyard. It was established in 1985 and the owners pride themselves on employing traditional methods together with modern equipment and techniques to produce a range of wines – white, red and sparking. The main wines are Seyval and Madeleine Angevine, both early ripening white varieties, and Triomphe, a red grape.

The vineyard is open on a weekend, on a Saturday from 11.00-17.00 and a Sunday from 12.00-16:00. It is also open most weekdays 11.00-17:00 but if travelling a distance a phone call to check they are open is a good idea.

Guided tours can also be arranged for groups from mid July to mid September. These include a vineyard walk, winery talk and free tastings. Advance booking is required. Tour costs plus details available on request.

Yorkshire Puddings - A British Classic

Yorkshire puddings are a classic Yorkshire dish. In this county they are usually served as a starter with gravy before a roast dinner or served with the roast. Yorkshire puddings can also be served as a canape filled with your favourite filling, made into a giant pud and filled with a casserole or even served as a dessert.

I like my Yorkshire puddings with my roast dinner but how do you like yours?

RSPB Summer Garden Wildlife Survey 2009

If you are like me and are interested in the wildlife that frequents your garden then the RSPB Summer Wildlife Garden Survey is the perfect excuse to spend time in the garden this week. From the 8th June until the 14 the June, the RSPB are asking people to count the wildlife in their garden.

The RSPB would like you to record sightings of :

• Birds,
• Frogs,
• Squirrels,
• Badgers,
• Toads,
• Any other wildlife.

So all you need to do to take part is simply spend one hour during the week of 8-14 June, counting the birds and any other wildlife that visit your garden, and record the highest number of each species seen at any one time. Then submit your results online at the RSPB.

Bee Keeping

I am thinking about getting a beehive and keeping some bees. I have always fancied bee keeping and after much deliberation I am thinking of taking the plunge into the world of bees and honey but hopefully no bee stings!

I will need to do my research first so if anyone knows any good books, websites or course on bee keeping then please let me know.

Wolds Way Lavender

Wolds Way Lavender is a great Yorkshire attraction that has free admission and parking.

• There are lavender and herb sensory areas were you can view and smell the plants in the raised beds.
• You will find a plant centre with over 120 varieties of herbs and lavenders available to purchase.
• A visitor information area provides you with detailed information and images about the story of Wolds Way Lavender.
• Essential oil distillery with an audio video presentation.
  
• A wide range of lavender products are available in the Lavender Farm Shop.
• Why not enjoy light refreshments in the Lavender Tearooms, you could even try a lavender scone!

Wold Way Lavender is open from the beginning of April to the end of October from 10am to 4 pm and 5pm in the Summer months. The other facilities include toilets & disabled toilets, baby changing facilities, Guide dogs are welcome and coach parties can be catered for but need to phone in advance (01944 758641).

Open Farm Sunday

Open Farm Sunday will be held this Sunday the 7th June 2009 and is an event organised by Leaf (Linking Environment and Farming). Farms across the UK will be opening their farm gates to visitors and running events and activities throughout the day to show case their farms and farming practices.

Although Valley View Farm is not publicly opening it's gates this year on Open Farm Sunday, a stay at our Valley View Farm Cottages will give you an insight into farming as John and Stuart (father and son) go about their farming business on our family run farm of beef cattle, sheep and arable land.
