Viking Activities In York February Half Term 2012

York is famous for it's Viking heritage and there are plenty of Viking activities to keep the children occupied this February half term at the Yorkshire Museum.

Viking Belts and Braces! -13 - 17 February, 10.30am - 12.30pm and 1.30pm - 4pm Come and try your hand at Viking fashion and design. See how the Vikings accessorised. Have a go at designing your own belt. Make it from leather and plait it from wool and then you can even wear it home. Be inspired by the objects on display and take a close look at the the decoration and design on Viking artefacts.
Make a Viking Long Boat - 13 and 14 February, 10.30am - 12.30pm and 1.30pm - 4pm Why not join artist Mary Passeri who will be making a full-size Viking Longboat and decorating it with printed patterns. After the 15th February - once the longboat has been made visitors can dress up and play at being a Viking, navigating their way across the seas.

Big Garden Birdwatch 28th & 29th January 2012

The RSPB is asking people in the UK to look out of their window and spend an hour of their weekend recording how many birds they see at any one time for Big Garden Birdwatch which takes place on the 28 and 29 January 2012. Last year, over 600,000 people counted more than 10 million garden birds. The information helps the RSPB build a picture of how well each species is doing.

You can count the birds in your garden, around your business or in the local park.

These special excursions are ideal for families with small children. You can choose from 4 shuttle services each day, either departing from Pickering to Levisham and back, or from Grosmont to Goathland and back.

The fare includes a present from Santa for each child, and seasonal refreshments including mince pies, served in our marquees at Pickering or Grosmont stations. Just show your ticket at the marquee. Each excursion can take up to 90 minutes, to allow for each child to meet Santa in his grotto. The train may be stationery for part of the journey.

We always raise some turkeys for Christmas and this years flock are nearly ready. They must have a sense that something is afoot as they keep getting out of their barn & enclosure.

In the past few days we have seen the turkeys wander past the AmpleBosom office window and one of us has had to dash out to round them up before they make their escape into the village!

There is never a dull moment here at Valley View Farm so if you would like to see a real working farm then why not take a break from all that Christmas shopping and spend a few tranquil days here in the beautiful North York Moors. Bonfire Night Safety For Pets & Animals

Bonfire Night is Saturday 5th November and this can be a stressful time for pets, livestock and wild animals.

If you don't like all the noise of the fireworks over Bonfire night and your pets don't either, then why not consider getting away from it all. Come away with your pet for a quiet time at Old Byland, no loud noises here only peace and quiet awaits both you and your pets. Dogs and other pets welcome.

If you are able to, why not walk your dog during the day so you don't have to take your dog out after dark when the fireworks will be going off.
You could play music to drown out the noise of the fireworks.
Let your dog hide behind the furniture if they want to!
Keeping your cat and dog occupied can help to distract them from the noise of the fireworks. Why not give them a treat or toy to play with.
Cat owners are instructed to close all windows and doors to keep them inside the house.
Those who have small animals such as guinea pigs should bring them inside the house.
Horses should be stabled while fireworks are being let off.
For those of you having a bonfire then please check the bonfire before lighting to check for animals - hedgehogs often htry to hibernate at the base of a bonfire.

Fossil Collecting

One of my staff recently went to Whitby for the day and visited Staithes and went fossil collecting. This is a great way to spend some time in the fresh air blowing away the cobwebs, so why not pick up your bucket, spade and fossil hammer in your hunt for ammonites, jet and shells, along the North East coast. Any of the beaches of Whitby, Staithes, Saltwick Bay, Runswick Bay or Robin Hoods Bay to name a few are great places to fossil hunt.

Christmas Carols In Kirkgate December 2011

I just wanted to let you know about the Christmas Carol singing that will take place in Kirkgate York on the 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 13 December 2011, 7.30pm, doors open at 6pm.

This is a popular festive celebration in the recreated Victorian street, Kirkgate.

Members of the York Philharmonic Male Voice Choir are joined by ladies from The Kirkgate Ladies to sing a programme of traditional Christmas carols.

The cafe will be open from 6pm, prior to the concert, selling seasonal fare and hot drinks.

Tickets are £14.50 or £12.50 for concessions and this price includes a programme. They go on sale at the museum reception from 9.30am on 3 October, and are available by telephone from 9.30am on 4 October, on 01904 650333.

"Visit during the half-term holiday and enjoy some superstitious tales and spooky stories. There will be poems and stories suitable for the very young in a special room near to the Victorian street, as well as more chilling tales for older children in the York Castle Prison cells.

Visitors will be able to learn about the superstitions behind some of the objects in the collection. There will also be the chance to make a 'witch ball', which people traditionally placed in the windows of their homes to ward off evil spirits."

Astronomy Events October Half Term 2011

I just wanted to let you know about the astronomy events taking place in York this October half term.

Astronomy Day and Night - 27 October A day of looking at the stars and planets in and around the York Observatory in the Museum Gardens.
Get Creative 10.30am - 12.30pm and 1.30pm - 4pm Draw the stars and model a planet at these drop-in workshops.
Observatory Open Day 11.30am - 2.30pm Come and look around the oldest working observatory in Yorkshire.
Meet the Astronomer 12.30pm - 1pm Astronomer Martin Lunn will show you what to look out for in the winter sky.
Telescope Session 2pm - 4pm Look through an 18th century telescope.
Observing the Night Sky 6.30pm - 8.30pm Drop in and gaze at the night sky, right here in the Museum Gardens. Free, no need to book. Part of the Illuminating York festival.

For all of you how are interested in the history of food I just wanted to give you a quick reminder about the October Potato Week which takes place from the 22nd - 30th October 2011 at Ryedale Folk Museum.

This half term join in with the Potato Week celebrations and Big Draw activites. There will be artists workshops in the Manor House all week, so you can come and create your own work of art! There will also be a celebration of all things potato with cooking, potato based crafts and everything you need to know about the potato!

Observatory Open Day From October 2011

I just wanted to let you know about the Observatory Open Days at York. The Observatory will be open very Saturday plus every second Tuesday, from 4 October, 2011 (closed 24 and 31 December) 11.30am - 2.30pm.

"Come and gaze upon the stars in what is the oldest working observatory in Yorkshire.
The observatory was built in 1832 and 1833 and its 4in refractor telescope was built by York man Thomas Cooke in 1850 before he went on to make the then-largest telescope in the world. York played a crucial role in the development of astronomy in the 1780s when York-based astronomers John Goodricke and Edward Piggot laid the foundations of the study of stars of varying brightness."

Pickering War Weekend 14th to 16th October 2011

Just wanted to remind you about the very popular Pickering War Weekend that will take place this coming weekend from the 14th – 16th of October.

Learn about how we lived in the 1940’s with this reminiscent weekend, attend some of the events taking place either in Pickering or aboard the NYMR – great fun and informative too!

This year will be the 19th annual Pickering War weekend. Revisit the past and wartime England with the The Pickering War Weekend. Visit Pickering and the surrounding villages to learn about how we used to lived in the 1940’s.
Events taking place in Pickering and on the NYMR include:

street parties and displays,
special exhibitions at Beck Isle Museum, North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway and the Kirk Theatre.
Villages along the Railway line will also be holding events too.

The event begins at noon on Friday when the flag is raised in Pickering and from then on many visitors arrive in period costume, so why not be one of them and join in the fun.

Saturday sees processions in the High Street, military vehicles, singers, bands and 40's style evening dances.

On the Friday and Saturday evenings from 7.30pm -11pm there will be nostalgic dancing and fun to the music of Ava Disco with DJ Lynne (back by popular demand).

The event will include original soundtracks of events that took place during those World War II years and dancing to nostalgic music for swing plus old time favourites such as the valeta, St Bernard Waltz, military two step plus quicksteps and foxtrots.

The railway stations are taken over with Levisham becoming occupied France and Goathland defended by The Home Guard. It is a popular and fun event which is growing each year.

For all you plant lovers and garden enthusiasts I just thought that I would let you know that Scampston Autumn Plant Fair will take place on Sunday 9th October 2011 at The Walled Garden at Scampston.

More than a dozen specialist nurseries and stalls selling garden related items will be attending the Plant Fair on Sunday 9 October. All of the stalls will have excellent plants and products for sale and refreshments will be available all day both on the plant fair field and at The Garden Restaurant.

Scampston Hall is the home to the stunning Walled Garden and Grounds, the beautiful contemporary garden, the gardens only became open to the public for the first time in 2004, people visit from all over the world and it has been received with great acclaim.

The Illuminating York Festival will take place this year each evening from Wednesday 26 - Saturday 29 October 2011 between 7.00 - 10.00pm. So come and visit York and see some of the key York landmarks illuminated in wonderful colours!

The festival is now in it's seventh year. "Over the past six years the festival has presented specially commissioned digital artworks on several of the city’s historic buildings (including York Minster, the Yorkshire Museum and the Bar Walls), celebrating York’s unique architecture and bringing internationally renowned artists to the city centre for thousands to enjoy."

Star Gazing At Sutton Bank 1st October 2011

Join York Astronomy Club for some star gazing as they look at the night skies on 1st Ocober 2011 at Sutton Bank Visitor Centre. Illustrated talks will take place in the centre tearooms. Bring your own telescope if you wish and advice will be given on how to use it.

Children under 8 may not be able to see through the telescopes.

Yorkshire Alpaca Show Thirsk 15th October 2011

I just wanted to let you know that the Yorkshire Alpaca Show will take place on 15th October 2011 at Thirsk Farmers Mart.

Entrance is free and the hugely popular alpaca showing classes will be going on all day.

This event will start at 9.30 a.m. with some of the top breeders from all over the UK displaying their beautiful alpacas for visitors and offering their expert advice on how to keep them.

120 will compete under cover, for rosettes and sashes in an event run under the strict rules and guidance of the British Alpaca Society and presided over by the world-respected judge, Tim Hey.

NEW for this year - FUN classes for Junior Handler, Handsomest Boy Alpaca and Prettiest Girl Alpaca - so bring along your pet alpacas to win rosettes and prizes!

There are numerous trade stands displaying and selling alpaca and associated goods, lots of information and helpful advice for new and established alpaca owners. The Border Mill will display their yarn, buy fleeces and answer any questions on the processing of fleece at their mini-mill. The York & District Guild for Weavers, Spinners and Dyers will have an exhibition of woven and knitted products made from alpaca fibre for you to admire and buy. There will also be stands of alpaca feeds, paddock equipment, all terrain vehicles, alpaca transport, socks and scarves, duvets etc.

So come along and enjoy yourself at this year's Yorkshire Alpaca Show!
